In 2008, presidential candidate Barack Obama answered a question that touched on bilingualism at a town hall meeting in Powder Springs, Ga., when he said “you should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language.”

Inspired by the huge success of Dual Language Programs, we felt that it is time for German Language Programs in New York City.
We were searching for a school in Brooklyn that supported our vision, but also had the space to accommodate us. Public transportation was important but we also needed a district with lots of parents that were willing to drive the initiative and be motivated enough to be first movers. We found P.S. 18 and are happy to have the full support from the leadership team of the school, but also the super intendent, Ms. Alicja Winnicki.
With Germans, Austrians and Swiss families living in Brooklyn, there has been a growing need to include German into the children’s school curriculum. It is important to us, that it is not our intent to compete with private schools, but we do see a need in complementing them by making a public school offer. Depending on the families’ needs, the German School Brooklyn, Kinderhaus or Wortspiele might be the right choice. We strongly feel there is a need for diversity and various programs.
German is hip again and omnipresent; there is even a club in Williamsburg called “Verboten”. Join us.
