Some Recent Questions on Pre-K and K
Are children in PK eligible for a school bus, or just K and older (provided that there will be enough children in the 2018/19 school year)?
PK students are not eligible for busing. Kindergarten students are eligible provided that there are sufficient children to create a bus stop.
Is there after school for PK? Can you tell us more about it? What are the hours, prices, etc?
We are trying to secure an afterschool program for Pre K. One of the organizations we are working with charges $15 per day and we need at least 10 – 12 students for them to start the program. The hours would be from 2:20 – 5:45. We are also reaching out to our Councilman to determine if he can help us get an afterschool program for Pre K. As an alternative, the Stagg Street Center in the neighborhood offers an afternoon program that pre K kids of PS18 attended in the past. Teachers accompanied the kids from PS18 to Stagg Street, which made this a safe and convenient option. The fee was USD50/week in summer 2017 for the afternoon program.
One of my kids is too young for pre K. Are there any good daycares in the area?
We are not here to give recommendations on daycares. You might want to take note however that a German parent authored a Yelp review on a daycare called the Stagg Street Center, which happens to be just around the corner from PS18, and which he recommends to visit. A negative Yelp review from 2016 that mentions the use of TVs at Stagg Street does not reflect the experiences of parents in our group.
Is there any German for PK planned?
The pre K teacher can expose students to German and Spanish vocabulary. German for PK will depend on funding. If we can fund it absolutely! We will continue to work with the Goethe Institut to discuss funding.
When is drop off in the morning. When is pick up?
The school day begins at 8:00 but the school is open to accept students at 7:30. Special arrangements can be made for pre K students who need to be dropped off before 8:00. Pick up is at 2:20 (for kindergarten and older grades there is an afterschool program that runs until 5.45). Parents or caregivers escort PK children to their classroom each morning.
How much outdoor time do PK children get?
PK children go outside everyday as long as it is above 40 degrees. They also have indoor movement with the PE teacher numerous times per week.
How is after care for K organized? Can you share more information, e.g. time, price, etc.?
Afterschool for K is provided by St. Nick’s Alliance. Students apply in September and seats are given on a 1st come 1st serve basis. There is no cost for this program and it runs from 2:20 – 5:45.
How much outdoor time to Kindergarteners get?
K goes outside each day for recess provided that it is above 32 degrees and dry.
What are the pre-requisites for a school bus?
Students must live in District 14 and live a certain distance away from the school. We submit names to the Office of Pupil Transportation and they tell us if the child is eligible for busing. Please contact the school for details.
Is there any STEM content part of the curriculum?
Yes, PS 18 is part of the City’s Computer Science for All initiative (CS4All). Students receive computer science instruction each week. A strong foundation in computer science will then transition into STEM. We want STEM to be part of the regular curriculum for all students not a program for some students.
